Our Story

© Absolute founders and friends on EMILY

Established in 1997, Absolute grew within the highly demanding International Eight Metre Class, through several 8mR projects, restorations and re-fitting programs. We had to go back to the roots of the Metre Class design, study the period designers, their different hull shapes, mast and rigging systems, the different boat builders and construction methods and the use of materials within Lloyd´s Scantling Rules. We checked plans and publications, articles and fitting catalogs through archives all over the world. We still do it today, it is our passion and commitment and along the years we have been able to collect a unique archive of period drawings, books, magazines and photographs that enrich our company‘s background and knowledge. “We left no stone unturned”.

OUR HISTORY

Back then the lack of adequate period bronze winches and fittings in the market to equip these classic racing yachts, led us to develop our own brand of classic racing winches and fittings. A careful analysis and research about period fittings and systems together with a deep knowledge of the shapes of classic Metre Class Yachts, led Absolute to come up with a set of solutions that masterly join period aesthetics with effectiveness, resulting in truly timeless pieces. As makers of yacht fittings we have been helping boatyards and owners along these last 27 years to refit and equip their classic yachts by recreating and manufacturing deck and mast fittings, including many structural items.

RESTORATION AND RE-FITTING

Word-of-mouth spread quickly and soon we were stepping from Metre Class Yachts to Ocean Racers and the most ground breaking and well regarded Big Class Racing Schooners like ATLANTIC or ELENA. Their owners and skippers heard about our commitment and work and trusted us to help with their restoration projects, as such, a full scope of deck and mast fittings were custom designed and produced. Our business expanded to projects all over the world to countries as far as Japan and Australia. We also still keep alive one of our main passions, apart from the restoration and re-fitting work, which is the search for classic International Metre Class Yacht plans that have never been built before. We are still passionately committed to promoting the building of these “forgotten” projects, remaining faithful to the original designs and keeping strictly to Lloyd’s period construction rules and regulations. At our boatyard a close-knit team of outstanding shipwrights is headed by Master Miguel Ministro. Their traditional boat building skills, knowledge and experience goes back three generations. We end up establishing long-lasting relationships with our clients. Most of them still keep a strong bond with Absolute and many have become really dear friends.
